Little Bohemia Trail Enhancement Project
The Minnesota Department of Transportation in partnership with the Little Bohemia Neighborhood Association, MN Nature, the City of Saint Paul, Minnesota Tree Care Advocates and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has launch a 3-year project to enhance the landscape surrounding the bike path that runs along 35E, from Grand Ave to St Clair Ave in the Little Bohemia Neighborhood. A significant investment on the part of our project partners, this beautification project will provide greater enjoyment and safety for everyone who used the trail.
Scope of Work
Work began in February of 2015 with the removal of damaged trees and trees threatened by the Emerald Ash Borer in Pleasant Place. Work continued in March with pruning, tree removal, and general landscape maintenance along the trail from St. Clair Ave to Grand Ave. This is a comprehensive improvement to the trail, a once in a 30-year maintenance project!

MnDOT has removed trees that may cause structural damage to the 35E noise wall, or structural damage to the path. They also are pruning any limbs from trees that may be a threat to the safety and welfare of trail users. They are also going to remove any scrub trees, or scrub limbs on trees to help beautify the trail corridor. Finally they are going to try and clear the large slopes of invasive and undesirable vegetation.
LBNA Designates 35E Bike Path "Little Bohemia Trail"
Known informally as the 35E Bike Path, the LBNA thought the time was right to give the path a new name, in light of the work that has been done as a part of a 3-year project to enhance the landscaping around the path.
Work will take place throughout 2015 and over the course of the next three years. The full scope of the project includes:

Phase 1: 2015 Grand Ave. to Western
Phase 1 of the project was completed in 2015. Throughout the entire work area, MNDoT removed invasives (and employ treatments, where appropriate), structurally removed ash trees, removed dying trees and trees posing safety concerns, cleared brush, burs, etc., and mowed hillsides down in all three areas. They repaired sound walls and made other improvements in preparation of the plantings.
Thank You Volunteers!
Thank you to the many volunteers who helped throughout the year to make the first phase of this project a big success! Nearly 1000 trees, shrubs and perennials were planted along the bike path and park near Pleasant Place (corner of Harrison Ave and Garfield St), not to mention untold cubic yards of soil and mulch! Weeding, watering and other care and maintenance took place all summer long.

Phase 2: 2016 Western to Colborn St.
March 2016: MNDoT will continue to remove/treat buckthorn, clear hillsides, repair sound walls, and make other improvements in preparation of the plantings.
May 2016: Volunteers will plant trees, shrubs, and perennials in phase 2 per MNDoT’s landscape designs.
May–October 2016: Volunteers will maintain the plantings in phases 1 & 2

Phase 3: 2017 Colborn St. to St. Clair Ave.
September 2021: Volunteers will plant trees, shrubs, and perennials in phase 3 per MNDoT’s landscape designs.

Ongoing: Volunteers will maintain the plantings in phases 1 & 2 & 3
